Meeting Great Minds Series Inspires Local Students

Meeting Great Minds is a speakers series created by Lorain County Community College’s University Partnership and high school educators. The series brings speakers from all over the world to share their knowledge, wisdom and guidance at LCCC’s Stocker Arts Center, giving local high school students an opportunity to hear first-hand accounts of success and inspiration from world-renowned experts in their fields of study. The presentation and message are re inforced by group demonstrations, experiments and hands-on learning opportunities to engage the students in focused exploration of specific themes.

Meeting Great Minds events have included presentations by such notable guests as scientist Neil Gershenfeld, Pulitzer Prize winner Jared Diamond, artist and Autistic savant Daniel Tammet, Psychologist Kay Jamison, author Russell Banks, and music industry veteran Kevin Lyman.

This month, the Stocker Arts Center hosted The Three Doctors, for an unprecedented, sold-out presentation. This installment of the Meeting Great Minds series gave local high school students the unique opportunity to witness the inspirational stories of these three amazing men and how they made their journey from poverty to success.

Drs. Sampson Davis, Rameck Hunt and George Jenkins serve as an extraordinary model of leadership. As teens growing up in the tough inner-city of Newark, New Jersey, they made a pact: they would stick together, go to college, graduate, and become doctors. Determined not to become victims of their environment, the trio stood strongly together, held true to their pact, and have become one of the most remarkable success stories of inspiration, dedication and determination.

The Three Doctors have now resolved to share their story of success and spread their message of hope. As a result, they received the prestigious Essence Award in 2000 for their accomplishments and leadership. In addition to their award, their groundbreaking TV special aired on Lifetime Television during a special segment titled “Things We Do for Love,” and the have appeared on the “Oprah Winfrey Show.”

The trio also founded The Three Doctors Foundation (http://www.threedoctorsfoundation.org/) to conduct outreach based on their mission to inspire and create opportunities through education, mentoring and health awareness.

The Three Doctors have written books that share each of their stories. “The Pact: Three Young Men Make a Promise and Fulfill a Dream,” was a New York Times Best Seller. It was followed by “We Beat the Street.” A third, released October 4, 2007, is titled “The Bond: Three Young Men Learn to Forgive and Reconnect with Their Fathers.”

Drs. Jenkins, Hunt and Davis deliver a well-needed and urgent message of hope and inspiration everywhere they go. Their key messages:

Never underestimate the power of self-reliance and inner strength
Attach a timeline and devise a strategy for achieving your goals, and finally
Surround yourself with like-minded people who are in line with your aspirations.

LCCC is proud to present this and other success stories through the Meeting Great Minds series. “Meeting Great Minds has not only given area students the chance to listen to famous authors, professors, scientists, and others—but it has given students the opportunity to interact with them, too,” says Nadia Leary, Marketing and Recruitment Specialist for the University Partnership. “Our participants are able to really apply the message of the speaker to their own individual situation.”
